What are the magnetic field and the atmosphere protecting us against?
Strong magnetic field surrounds Earth like an a invisible shield protecting us from the majority of high-energy particles that come from the Sun and from deep space. It is able to do this because the particles are usually electrically charged and can therefore be diverted by a magnetic field. Meanwhile, the atmosphere protects us from dangerous radiation. The ozone layer, for example, absorbs some of the ultraviolet radiation which causes skin cancer. Even the more energetic X-rays and gamma rays are blocked by the atmosphere. The atmosphere also protects us from the smaller pieces of rock that are constantly bombarding Earth from space. They simply burn up and never reach the surface.
